Man at dentist using a mirror to look in his mouthOther than brushing and flossing, you probably don’t spend much time thinking about your teeth during the day. However, if it weren’t for your pearly whites, your life would be much different. Believe it or not, each tooth serves an important purpose. Here are 6 surprising things you didn’t know about your teeth.

1. Your Teeth Are Unique

Every mouth is as unique as fingerprints, which is why dental records can be used to identify human remains or for criminal investigations. Not even identical twins have matching sets. Besides your teeth, your “tongue print” is also distinctive.

2. Enamel is Stronger Than Some Metals

Your enamel is the hard outer layer of a tooth that protects the softer dentin and pulp underneath. It is the hardest substance in your body, it is even stronger than some metals. Although it’s made of calcium and phosphate like your bones, it also contains proteins and crystallites that add to its strength.

3. Enamel Can’t Grow Back

Enamel may be strong, but it isn’t indestructible. It can erode from acids in foods and drinks or aggressive brushing. Not to mention, it can chip or crack. No matter the reason, your enamel won’t grow back. Once it is gone, it’s gone for good, which is why you can’t brush away cavities.

4. Your Teeth Can Affect Your Health

Your oral and general health are closely connected. While you might have heard about gum disease’s link to heart disease and other issues, the health of your teeth can also affect your wellness. Damaged or missing teeth can make it difficult to chew certain foods. Eliminating them from your diet can lead to nutritional deficiencies that can harm your wellness.

5. You Spend 24 Hours Per Year Brushing

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing your teeth for at least 2 minutes in the morning and at night. This is equivalent to 24 hours of brushing every 365 days if you follow the ADA’s advice.

6. You Produce 10,000 Gallons of Saliva

Saliva is essential for your oral health and kick-starts digestion. It keeps your mouth moist to combat oral bacteria. Your spit also washes away food particles to keep your mouth clean in between brushing and flossing. You will produce about 10,000 gallons of saliva during your lifetime.

With no teeth, you wouldn’t have the beautiful smile you see in the mirror. You wouldn’t be able to enjoy a juicy steak or even speak clearly. Your teeth are pretty great, so give them the attention they deserve to ensure they last for a lifetime. Don’t forget to visit your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup.
